RESULTS SUMMARY
81.2% hub units questioned
63.8% response rate = response from 52% UK units
New representatives
Half offered new representatives = 41 additional people = 59% increase overall
Support locally and raising awareness
Over 2/3rd felt they had support from within their unit ‘in practice’
2/3rd spent time raising awareness using
•teaching sessions
•every day activities - waste reduction, bolus drugs (not infusion) etc.
•meetings - clinical governance, HD, ward, MDT
•dedicated meetings eg ‘renal environmental group’
•included in new staff orientation pack
•events eg bike to work day

86.4% used CGH website – 70% in last 3 months
70.5% used renal 10:10 checklist – 38.6% used poster
Some used home made labels and flyers
Would value downloadable ‘ready to use’ resources

14-30% had tried to replicate case studies – 1/3rd still running
27-54% would like to have a go
2/3rd have made changes ‘however small’ in the last year
11% have assisted others
Types of project
Paper – electronic patient letters, double sided results, no local printing
Videoconferencing – review patients, MDTs, staff education
E-consultation
Tele-OP – HD, CKD, Tx
Water - central water treatment, reject salvage, central priming
Central acid delivery
Waste – baler, recycling, reducing consumables
IT – auto shutdown
Food – reduce waste in HD units

SUMMARY
•There is a lot of support for green nephrology at a local level
•It is spreading beyond renal services
•There is a high level of activity and desire to be active
•Cost and carbon savings demonstrated for individual projects
•There is evidence of replication of ideas between regions
Identified need for:
•Time
•Fewer financial barriers
•More support at senior management and Trust level
•Ways round regulations eg COSHH, EU
•Downloadable resources
•Searchable website
•Educational tools
•Link to other representatives / online communication facility
•List of a few, clear areas to focus on + instructions

•Focus on local representatives
•Clear need for resource development – website + tools + blog
•Find a solution for
•Time – always a problem
•Support from senior management + organization
The CSH aims to provide:
•Background knowledge
•Communication between representatives
•Practical and teaching resources resources
•Central reporting
Move to new model where Trusts / Boards fund a session of nurse time to
implement sustainable healthcare projects eg as in Fife where £45k annual savings
have been demonstrated?
