Neuropidemiology Experience
in Upper Egypt

History of Neurolepidemiology research
in Arab Republic of Egypt is dating since 1984
by Professor Kandil, the leader in this Field in
our
community.
Epidemiological
studies
carried by Prof. Kandil were in the field of
Epidemiology of Extra pyramidal disorders,
Mental
Retardation,
Depression,
Epilepsy, Dementia, Migraine…..etc)
Stroke,
Then other members of Neurology and Psychiatry
department, Asyut University started to follow the same steps
in the field of Neuroepidemiology. In 2006, the first project "
Epidemiology of major Neurological disorders in Al
Kharga district " was carried out from 2006 – 2009 where
62,583 populations were screened by 3 specialists of
Neurology, 15 social workers and 6 staff members of
Neurology from Assiut university and Alzhar University
(Assiut branch) – 11 manuscripts were published
international Journals from this project till now.

The
Second
Project
"
Epidemiology
of
Neurological and Psychiatric disorders in AL Qusier city,
Red Sea Governorate " was carried out from, 2009 – 2012,
where 33,285 Populations were screened door to door by 3
specialists of neurology and Psychiatry, 15 social workers and
12 staff members of Neurology and psychiatry. 9 manuscripts
were published in the international Journals from this
project till now. 15 publications from both Projects (Upper
Egypt) are under preparation for publication in the
international Journals within the this year.
The third Project " Reading Disabilities
(2012 – 2015) among 4th grade primary
school students, Asyut city, for screening,
diagnosis and cognitive rehabilitation of
students
with
SLD
using
specifically
constructed computerized programs.
Neuroepidemiology
lab, Faculty
of
Medicine is planning for three future Projects
in the next years, through:
1- Neuroepidemiology of Genetically Determined
Neurological and Psychiatric Disorders.
2- Cognitive disorders among children and Elderly
3- Modification of the Prepared Computerized
Programs (from Previous project in this lab) to
suit for diagnosis and cognitive rehabilitation of
2nd grade students with Learning Disabilities in
primary Schools.
4- In collaboration with the unit of Genetic and
Metabolic disorders, (Prof. Tahia Hashim; Prof. of
Biochemistry), the following researches are in the
preparatory stage:
• A}- Biochemical study of D- amino acids
(Deserine) in schizophrenia.
• B}- Biochemical update of uncontrolled Epilepsy;
Gene mutation of synapsin- 2 and Defyrin.
5- Some Neurological researches in the field
of the role of stem cell therapy in
Neurological disorders will be designed in
near future, in collaboration with Tissue
Culture and Molecular biology Center,
(Prof. Heba saad; Prof. of Histology).
