Facts about Palmer
Hayden
His name was Palmer Cole Hayden.
He was born in Widewater, Virginia on
January 15,1890 and died on February
18,1973.
As a child he was inspired by his older
brother to draw. He wanted to become a
fiddle player, but his family couldn’t afford a
fiddle or fiddle lessons. He decided to
pursue drawing, his true childhood passion
in a towns surrounding countryside.

Palmer moved to Washington, D.C. as an
adolescent trying to find work. Working as
an errand boy and porter, he spent most of
his spare time sketching boats on the
Potomac. He placed an advertisement in the
local newspaper, trying to find a job as an
artist’s assistant. Every time he went to an
interview the artists would turn him down
because he was black! After many other
turn downs Hayden finally joined the army.
