Section 2 The Necessities of Life
What You Will Learn
CA Standard
7.1.a Students know
cells function similarly
in all living organisms.
What It Means
Why It Matters
Cells perform the same
actions in all living
things.
At the cellular level, all
living organisms share
common traits.

Section 2 The Necessities of Life
Every organism needs:
1. Water
• makes up about
70% of your cells
• needed for most of
the chemical
reactions involved in
metabolism

Section 2 The Necessities of Life
Every organism needs:
2. Air
•
•
•
•
air = oxygen + nitrogen + carbon dioxide
oxygen releases energy from food
plants need carbon dioxide to make food
some organisms can live without air and are called
anaerobic

Section 2 The Necessities of Life
Every organism needs:
3. A Place to Live
• place must have all of the things they need to
survive
• Often organisms compete for the best places to
live. Space is limited, especially space that
includes food, water, and other necessities.
• The amount of space needed to survive varies
from organism to organism.

Section 2 The Necessities of Life
Every organism needs:
• three groups based on how they get their food:
– producers make their own food through
photosynthesis
ex: plants, algae, and some types of bacteria
– consumers must eat other organisms, such as
plants or animals, to get food
– decomposers are a group of consumers that
get their food from breaking down the nutrients
in dead organisms and their wastes
ex: mushroom, fungus
