PROTEIN
What is protein???

Proteins are essential for
nearly all body cells.

It is necessary for the
development and repair of
bone, muscle, skin, and
blood.


Protein is also known as
“body builders”.
Next to water, protein is
the most abundant
substances in the human
body.
What is protein???


Protein is also the key
element of antibodies that
protect us from diseases.
Protein helps the
transportation of iron,
oxygen, and nutrients to all
body cells.

Also is used as energy to
cells when fats and
carbohydrates are not
available.

4 grams of Protein = 1
calorie
Protein Structure

Protein gets broken
down into what we
call Amino Acids.

There are 20 total
amino acids


Body makes 11
The other 9 amino
acids must come from
your diet.

These are called
“essential” amino
acids.
Protein in Foods







Here are protein rich
foods.
Ground Beef
Pork Chop
Chicken
Eggs
Peanut Butter
Beans
Complete vs. Incomplete Protein

Complete proteins




Higher quality
Contains all essential amino
acids
Allows for tissue growth
and repair
Food examples




Meat
Fish
Eggs
Milk

Incomplete proteins




Lower quality protein
Lacks one or more
essential amino acids
Can cause malnutrition if
these are the only proteins
consumed.
Food examples




Grains
Nuts
Beans
Seeds
Protein Function in Athletes


Protein is primarily used to build, maintain, and repair body
tissues.
Extra protein in the body will be used for immediate energy, if
it is not needed immediately the protein becomes stored fat.
 Protein is only used for energy if there is no more fat and
carbohydrates to be used.

Objectives






1. The students will be able to state what protein does for the
body.
2. The students will be able to know the difference between
the nine essential amino acids and eleven other amino acids.
3. The students will be able to describe the difference
between complete and incomplete proteins.
4. The students will be able to understand how protein is
used for an athlete.
5. The students will be able to correctly identify weather the
piece of food in the picture is an incomplete or complete
protein.
6. The students will show appropriate behavior towards their
classmates and teachers throughout the entire class period.
