What is a tetracycline stain?
 It is an development disturbance
due to consumption of teratogenic
drug during the fetal period.
 Therefore, this type of antibiotic
therapy can result in tetracycline
stains within the child’s primary
teeth, which are developing during
that time.

The coloration of tetracycline stains
range from intrinsic yellow to yellowbrown discoloration of the teeth which
can occur in slight, moderate, or severe
degrees, as the antibiotic becomes
chemically bond to the dentin for the
life of the tooth, and because of the
transparency of the overlying enamel.

The tetracycline stain disturbance
usually occurs during the maternal use
of tetracycline antibiotics during the
second half of the pregnancy.

Similarly to the primary teeth, this
developmental disturbance has an
impact on the adult’s permanent teeth
as well.

However, if the permanent teeth are
involved, treatment may require fullcoverage crowns or veneers, it improves
the appearance of the teeth. Even
though in some cases, vital tooth
whitening may even out discoloration.
 The dental team doesn’t have much to do with this type of development
disturbance. However, the dental team can explain the reasons why
tetracycline stains occurs and the possibilities of preventing this kind
of disturbance. For example, they can advise pregnant ladies to avoid
any type antibiotics during pregnancy , and children to avoid
teratogens.
 When it comes to treat the tetracycline stains, dental team can treat
adult's permanent teeth with full-coverage crowns or veneers.
