#3 Identifying best practices and insights
Annual Benefits Survey
COST: Increased spending continued; premium trend in Minnesota tends
to run higher than national averages. Consumer education is #1 tactic to
control trend. Lots of tactics. Lots of vendors. Neutral ratings.
HOT TOPICS. Cost Transparency, Wellness ROI, and Specialty Drug Costs.
VENDOR MANAGEMENT. One-fourth of all employers are planning
on changing health plan vendors this coming year. Cost is #1 driver, along
with increased access and different delivery.
SERVICES/INNOVATION. The most commonly used services have
the lowest ratings. Many employers are “not interested” in some of the
highest rated, newer services. Respondents are contemplating programs
with both high and low ratings

#7 Impacting care delivered in Minnesota
Minnesota Bridges to Excellence
“Our focus is to deliver on the
Triple Aim of improving health
and enhancing the patient
experience while making care
affordable. It’s an honor to be
recognized by Minnesota Bridges
to Excellence for our dedication
to achieving these results. Our
clinicians and teams work
tirelessly to ensure the best
possible care and outcomes for
every patient.”
Steven Connelly, M.D.
President, Park Nicollet Health Services
“We reinvest the
dollars (rewards
received from
Minnesota Bridges to
Excellence) in our care
system. That is how
we have been able to
improve and build
better services for our
patients.”
Julie Gerndt, M.D.
Chief Medical Officer,
Mankato Clinic
10
“The (Minnesota Bridges to
Excellence) recognition is
important to our system as
acknowledgement of the work
we do every day. We
recognize that there’s still
room for improvement. We
don’t have all our clinics on
the system, but the
recognition for the hard work
is nice.”
Jennifer Johnson
Regional physician lead for clinical
outcomes and quality for
Mayo Clinic Health System

#10 Making the Voice of Purchasers Heard
“It is important to continue to
publicly report C-section rates in
Minnesota. Purchasers observe that
there is still variation in cost and
quality of care. This measure should
be retained.”

Minnesota Community Measurement
Measure Review Committee
“Valid cost and quality
measures and patient reported
outcomes that are meaningful
to patients and consumers
must be a national priority.”

“We believe that full
transparency is critical. The
total cost of care measures
should be publicly reported
immediately to employers and
consumers, not just to the
medical groups and health
plans.”

A powerful voice for positive change
1. Aligned interests
2. Independence
The Action Group is the only Minnesota organization
whose sole purpose is to align and represent the
collective voice of those who pay the bill for health
care – employers, public purchasers and individuals.
Unlike so many others, we have no conflicts of interest
in working with employers.
4. Capabilities and proven track record
3. Relationships and influence
