Salford

Health needs
• Access to health services( Lack of language, Destitution etc..)
• Family separation
• Horizon Centre reduces inequalities that asylum seekers faces
by providing equitable culturally competent, safe and
effective primary care in sensitive and holistic manner
• The effect of poverty and malnutrition have a negative effect
on children and young people’s health (eg: Living on
Vouchers)
• There is a limited amount of information available in Salford in
relation to the area of drug and alcohol use amongst Young
refugees and asylum seekers
Housing Needs
• Many Young people unsuitable accommodation leads to
emotional difficulties such as having to cope with parents
feeling of isolation and depression
• Moving houses by NASS affects the education of Young and
children asylum seekers
• Transition period: Refugees are given 28 days to vacate NASS
accommodation and find alternative housing
Education
• Unfamiliar with British Education system
• Parents can not help in most of the cases and children may be
left to deal with difficulties(Supplementary classes in refugee
and asylum seekers communities to help to achieve in
schools)
• No access to further education for Young Asylum seekers and
those on discretionary leave to remain
• School sometimes refuses places to asylum seekers and
refugee fearing that it will affect test results unfavourably or
due to the lack of support that may be needed
• High mobility and being housed in temporary accommodation

• Lack of UK working
experience and reference
• Lack of mentoring system
