Alcohol
• A drug that alters the state of
consciousness (depressant)
• Increases the body’s BAC or blood
alcohol content
• As little as 1 drink can begin to
negatively affect the body for the
driving process
• Reaction Time

How Much is Too Much?
• BAC is determined by 4 factors.
• Quantity of alcohol consumed
• Body Weight
• How quickly drinks were consumed
• Food eaten

This is not an accurate document to use in the evaluation of BAC, it
is to provide a basic guideline.
Illegal limit
• 21 yrs or older
-> .08% or higher
• Under 21yrs
-> .01% or higher
BAC Levels
• The risk for causing a motor vehicle
accident
• doubles at slightly above .05%
• 6x’s greater at .10%
• 25x’s greater at .15%
• If you weigh 150lbs your chances of getting into an accident
doubles after 2 drinks

Penalties
• Refusal to take a breath test is equal to
driving with a BAC of .08% for a 1st
offense. This is called the “Implied
Consent Law”
• Penalties include:
• Loss of driving for 6mths – 1yr
• Sur-charge $1,000 per year for 3 years
• (failure to pay will result in an indefinite suspension
of driving until fee is paid)
Studies show that most people arrested for
drinking and driving had been drinking beer

• Food slows the absorption of alcohol

will not prevent a high BAC when
steadily drinking large amounts

• It is illegal to operate a motor vehicle
under the influence of any illegal drugs
• Drugs that “may cause drowsiness or
dizziness” should not be taken before
driving
• Cold pills
• Tranquilizers
• Some prescription medications

• Stop serving alcohol well before the
party ends
Designated Driver
• A DD is responsible for the safe
transportation of friends or family
members who have been drinking
alcoholic beverages
