UNIT 3
THE CONSCIOUS
SELF
AREA OF STUDY 1: MIND, BRAIN &
BODY
METHODS USED TO STUDY LEVELS OF
ALERTNESS IN NORMAL WAKING
CONSCIOUSNESS
Consciousness is a
Hypothetical Construct
Much of what we know about an individual’s
state of consciousness can only be inferred
from:
• Information provided by the individual
• Behaviour that is demonstrated
• Physiological changes that can be measured
VARIOUS DEVICES ARE USED TO MEASURE PHYSIOLOGICAL
RESPONSES THAT GIVE US EVIDENCE OF AN INDIVIDUAL’S STATE OF
CONSCIOUSNESS. PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSES THAT WE CAN
MEASURE INCLUDE:
•BRAIN WAVE ACTIVITY
•HEART RATE
•BODY TEMPERATURE
•GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSE (SWEATING)
METHODS USED TO STUDY LEVELS OF
ALERTNESS IN NORMAL WAKING
CONSCIOUSNESS
ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPH (EEG)
A machine that detects, amplifies & records general
patterns of electrical activity of the brain
The EEG translates this electrical activity into a visual pattern
of brain waves
FREQUENCY
Number of brain waves per
second
AMPLITUDE
The size of the peaks and
troughs of the pattern from a
baseline of zero activity

ALERTNESS IN NORMAL WAKING
CONSCIOUSNESS
ELECTROENCEPHALOGRAPH (EEG)
BRAIN WAVES
Four different patterns of brain waves have been identified
BETA:
NWC & focused attention
High frequency/Low amplitude
ALPHA:
Relaxed, wakeful state
High frequency/low amplitude
THETA:
Early stages of sleep
Medium frequency/High-Low
amplitude
DELTA:
Deepest stages of sleep
Low frequency/High amplitude

ALERTNESS IN NORMAL WAKING
CONSCIOUSNESS
HEART RATE
HEART RATE
How fast the heart beats
Changes in heart rate are associated with different states of consciousness
Measured by an electrocardiograph (ECG or EKG)
NWC – PHYSICAL
ACTIVITY
Heart rate increases
ASC –
DROWSY/UNCONSCIO
US
Heart rate decreases
ASC – STIMULANT
Heart rate increases

CONSCIOUSNESS
BODY TEMPERATURE
BODY TEMPERATURE
Core (internal) body temperature varies in a regular 24 hour pattern
NWC – PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Temperature increases
ASC – HEALTH PROBLEMS
OR DRUGS
Temperature increases
ASC – SLEEP
Temperature decreases
METHODS USED TO STUDY LEVELS OF
ALERTNESS IN NORMAL WAKING
CONSCIOUSNESS
GALVANIC SKIN RESPONSE
ELECTRICAL CONDUCTIVITY OF THE SKIN
Otherwise known as sweating
Increased sweating results in an increase in the electrical conductivity of
the skin
NWC – HIGH EMOTIONAL
RESPONSE
GSR increases
ASC – DRUG INDUCED
STATE
GSR increases
