Why play sports?
Research indicates student-athletes have:
• Higher G.P.A.’s
• Less drug/alcohol use
• Fewer teen pregnancies
• Lower drop out rate
• Higher graduation rate
• Fewer discipline referrals
Principles of Participation
Learn how to become a good teammate ,
making a positive contribution, regardless
of the role on the team.
Experience in problem-solving, decisionmaking and critical thinking.
Learn to develop trust and accept the
responsibility that comes with earning trust
from others.
Participating in a Sport is a
Privilege, not a Right
MHS Activity Code
Code of Conduct is comprised of 2
aspects that student athletes must be
responsible for:
• Drug and Alcohol use
• Behavioral
Drug/ Alcohol Code of Conduct
1st Offense
Suspension for 25% of the regular seasons events
and competitions scheduled for that activity. If the
number of suspended dates is a fraction, that
number will be rounded to the next whole number.
The student is expected to attend all practices,
follow all of the coach’s rules, and attend, but not
dress for all of the competitions.
Drug / Alcohol Code of Conduct
2nd Offense:
Suspension for 50% of the regular season for that current
or next activity. Any fraction will be rounded up to the
next whole number.
3rd Offense:
Career suspension from all extracurricular programs
from the date of the offense through graduation.
Behavioral Code of Conduct
24 hours/day
7 days/week
365 days a year
All 4 years
Suspension can range from one contest to an
entire season.
Discipline is normally progressive
Eligibility

the previous semester to be eligible the

Parents need to track child’s academic
progress.
NCAA Clearinghouse

Off Season Opportunities
Not Required
Opportunity to
improve
Goal should be to
reach your
potential
Not what you are,
but rather what you
can become
• “Natural
Consequences” of
not participating in
off-season
programs.
• Other athletes will
improve, while you
stay the same or
regress.
Communication Chain
1. Athlete to Coach
2. Parent & Athlete to Coach
3. Parent, Athlete, & Coach to Athletic
Director
• You are expected to express concerns directly with the
coach. Please don’t ask the coach or AD to keep
information from son or daughter
• Do not try and speak to them before or after a practice
or game. Please call them at school.
Communication Issues
Inappropriate for
Discussion:
• Playing Time
• Team Strategy
• Play Calling
• Other Student-Athletes
• Speaking for “other”
adults.
Appropriate For
Discussion
• Treatment of your
child mentally and
physically
• Ways to help your
child improve
• Concerns about
your child’s
behavior
Parent Code of Conduct
• Encourage good sportsmanship by being a positive role model.
• Try my best to make this a positive experience for everyone involved…my child,
participants, coaches, officials, and spectators.
• I will insist my child treat other players, coaches, officials, and fans with respect.
• I will reinforce the school's drug and alcohol free policies and refrain from using
alcohol and other drugs before or during contests.
• I will do my best to understand and appreciate the rules of the contest.
• I will be a "team" fan, not a "my child" fan.
• I will help my child learn that success is measured by the development of
skills/character, not just winning or losing.
• If I have a concern, my player will talk to the coach at the appropriate time and
place, i.e., never before, during, or immediately after a contest.
• I do my best to remember my ticket to a school athletic event provides me with
the privilege of observing the contest, not berating officials, coaches, or players.
INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOR OF ANY TYPE WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
ANYONE DISPLAYING THAT BEHAVIOR WILL BE ESCORTED OFF OF
SCHOOL PROPERTY BY ADMINISTRATION AND/OR POLICE.
