Your Notecards
How should they be organized?
Notecards should be organized by MAIN IDEA/TOPIC. If a source has useful information
that deals with two different MAIN IDEAS/TOPICS, make two SEPARATE notecards (e.g.
“Negative Impacts of Energy Drinks” and “Connection Between Energy Drink Consumption
and Drug Use”).
How will I use my notecards to write my persuasive essay?
When you are finished with your notecards, you will print them, cut them out, and then
organize them into piles based on where in your essay you will use the information
contained on the card.
For Example:
Pile 1- stuff I’ll probably use in my intro.
Pile 2- stuff I’ll probably use in my 1st body para. (related to health effects of smoking)
Pile 3-stuff I’ll probably use in my impacts bystanders) 2nd body para. (related to how
smoking negatively effects bystanders)
Pile 4-stuff I’ll probably use in my 3rd body para. (related to how smoking/nicotine can be
a gateway drug)
Pile 5-stuff I’ll probably use in my intro.
Sample Project Outline:
Topic: Smoking
Research Question:
Should selling cigarettes
should be illegal?
Notice: your
claim/thesis answers
your research
question.
Reason 1: It causes
severe health effects to
the smoker, including
death.
Claim/thesis: Selling
cigarettes should be
illegal.
Reason 2: It negatively
effects bystanders.
Reason 3:
Cigarettes/Nicotine can
be a gateway drug.
Sample Project thesis:
Topic: Smoking
Claim/thesis:
Selling
cigarettes should be
illegal.
Reason 1: It causes
severe health effects
to the smoker,
including death.
Reason 2: It
negatively effects
bystanders.
Reason 3:
Cigarettes/Nicotine
can be a gateway
drug.
Selling cigarettes should be illegal because it
causes severe health effects for the smoker, it
negatively affects bystanders, and the nicotine in
cigarettes can be a gateway to other drug use.
Your engaging HOOK goes here. Choose 1 of the 7 hook strategies
we learned about on Friday.
Include any other pertinent background information to
your topic.
Your thesis will be the last sentence of
your introduction paragraph.
Your thesis = your claim statement + your 3
reasons.
Why shouldn’t cell phones be
aloud in class?
NOTECARD REFLECTION:
On the sheet in front of you, reflect on the notecards you created yesterday.
Based on our discussion of these examples, what do you need to do differently
when creating notecards on your final two days of research? What do you need
to change about the notecards you’ve already created?
