The Geological Survey of Sweden
Government strategy – the role of SGU
in supporting the mining industry
The Geological Survey of Sweden
The expert agency for issues relating to bedrock,
soil and groundwater
The Geological Survey of Sweden
Important tasks:
•Supporting the development of the mining, rock and mineral
industry
•Promoting the use of geological information in societal planning
•Uniting and strengthening geological research in Sweden
•Bringing geology and geological knowledge to the fore in social
debate and in schools
The Mining Inspectorate is responsible for issuing permits for
minerals exploration and extraction under the Minerals Act
(1991:45).
Producing modern high quality data
•Essential for successful mineral exploration
•Excellent for advanced research projects
•Includes bedrock geology, geophysics, geochemistry
World class geological
data is a trademark for
the North European
geological surveys
Producing modern high quality data
•Drill core scanning – 230 km’s scanned by
hyperspectral imaging
Producing modern high quality data
2012-2015
Producing modern high quality data
The Barents project produced
•Airborne full tensor gravity and transient electromagnetic
(VTEM)
•A 74 km long seismic reflection and AMT profile from the
Kiruna area
•Bedrock mapping in key areas representing specific parts of
the supracrustal rocks in northern Norrbotten
•Regional mapping in southern Norrbotten
•Till geochemistry and
•Numerous reports
•...and more
Producing modern high quality data
Continous upgrading of databases
•Bedrock geology
•Mineral occurences
•Till geochemistry
•Airborne geophysics (mag, VLF, rad)
•Gravity measurements
•Quaternary geology
•Mineral production
•..and more
Improving access to data
Continously increasing online availability
The Mineral Resouces Information Office
A one-stop shop for exploration companies
The Mineral Resouces Information Office
•Data – SGU data and historic
data from government and
private exploration
•Drill cores and facilities – core
logging and sampling
•Advice – geologists and
technitians with mineral
exploration background
•Established 1994
•Located in Malå, northern
Sweden
Not “only” geology

Secondary resources
There is some potential in mining waste, at
least for some metals. However, for many
metals mining from primary resources will
remain the only viable solution for many
years to come

The Geological Survey of Sweden
SGU supports a sustainable mining sector by
•Producing world class geological data
•Continously improving access to data
•Maintaining the services of the Mineral Information Office
•Marketing Sweden abroad
•Participating and supporting research and innovation
•Covering the entire sector: from exploration throuhg
mining to recycling (mining waste)
•Participating in international development projects
The Geological Survey of Sweden
The main challenge – Social acceptence
It is no longer nesessary to explain the importence of
social acceptence to the industry – there, it is well known.
The main task now is to explain to the society – decision
makers, general public – why the mineral industry is
necessary for a modern society.
The Geological Survey of Sweden
The main challenge – Social acceptence
From this follows that we – SGU, the government, the
industry – need to increase the efforts not only to make the
industry more sustainable, but to show how much is
already done.
Continuing the National Mineral Strategy is an excellent
tool for this.
