Drug Education
BY CHAEWOON SONG
Why Did I Choose This Project
I chose drug education over sex education since I do not know much about drugs and I wanted
to know more about them; why they are bad, how they affect teenagers, what can be caused,
and what to do to avoid them.
The Government of Canada Website
http://www.nationalantidrugstrategy.gc.ca/pr
evention/youth-jeunes/facts-faits/index.html
I was kind of confused at first because there
were too many tabs and links placed, and I did
not think that it was the drug page.
However, the website organized its contents
very well and it made me look for what I want
fairly easily.
The Government of Canada Website
There were 6 major links which were: About the
strategy, Treatment, Enforcement, Funding
programs, Prevention, and Substance abuse. I
liked how each of them had very well
summarized information rather than long, boring
pages of words that I do not even understand.
However, it lacked its informative purpose. Yes it
had simple and clear information, but it could
not explain and describe any further questions,
or concerns. Because of these factors, people
who are looking forward to learning about drugs
might not find this site very interesting.
I liked how some of it had smaller links inside
because it made me curious and really read
through it. Overall, it was not satisfying for me.
Questions
1. Would young people find the website engaging? Why or why not?
2. Is the website informative, organized, easy to navigate?
I do not think young people would find this website very engaging simply because it
failed to hook me into it and was difficult for me to really understand what the site is.
The website is very well organized, easy to navigate and simple. However, in my
opinion, it lacked its informative purpose because it only had a few lines of describing
what “prevention” or “enforcement” was.
Xperiment
http://www.xperiment.ca/index_en.html
When I first went into this site, I was like “woah, what
is going on in this site?” I couldn’t really get it at first.
But shortly after, I found the tabs in the top side, and
started visiting them.
I seriously loved the idea of showing an experiment to
me because it made so much more sense than just
reading; I never thought about drug effects as serious
as the experiment I saw.
It was more appealing and informative than words.
Moreover, if I were a drug addict and have not yet had
any side effects or anything, then I would be extremely
panicked and call the first aid(which was on one of the
tabs) right away after watching the experiment, games,
and videos. It was extremely well made to both inform
and warn teenagers, and adults.
Questions
1.
Would young people find the website engaging? Why or why not?
2.
Is the website informative, organized, easy to navigate?
Young people like me would definitely find this site interesting because this site has a lot of
features that other sites don’t: the experiment, videos, and games. I understood how bad,
stupid and extreme the drugs actually were. After visiting the site, I am fully aware that I should
never, ever do drugs.
This website might be the most informative, organized drug-warning-site there ever was simply
because of its jaw dropping features. It also was very easy to navigate since everything you need
to click on is right there on the top wherever you go.
Frank Drugs Advice
http://www.talktofrank.com/
This site was extremely different than two other sites I’ve visited.
This site had something that the other two didn’t, and lacked
something that the other two had.
I was dizzy when I first entered this site because it had so many
features and tabs to click whereas others didn’t. It was very well
organized, and easy to navigate thanks to the tabs.
This site was specifically the most informative site I visited for the
matter of drugs because it had so much explanation which I was
looking forward to see, and even had the place where the “drug
users” can share their stories and help each other get eventually
better. I like this aspect because it seemed like the site is alive as
opposed to other “dead” sites.
The one thing I didn’t like was the fact that it had too much
information. I’m not sure about others, but I didn’t read through
every single description mainly because it was too long.
However, people who are REALLY into learning this subject, they
will love it because this site literally has A-Z.
Questions
1.
Would young people find the website engaging? Why or why not?
2.
Is the website informative, organized, easy to navigate?
I don’t think young people would find this site very engaging or interesting because it doesn’t
have the entertainment like the Xperiment site. Also reading all these information can be very
boring and it might make people discouraged to learn more about drugs.
The website was fairly easy to navigate and well organized because it had many different tabs I
can go in to, and they all had clear topics such as “Drugs A-Z” or “Share your story”. The best
part of this site is that this site is extremely informative. Literally from A-Z, it defines what the
word means, and describe with several examples and talks about main effects and risks. Again,
very informative.
Just Think Twice Website
http://www.justthinktwice.com/drugfacts/
This site was clear and easy to learn from the first place. The two
aspects I like.
I realized that this is the site for drug information because it had
“Learn about drugs” in a large font in the middle of the site. And
below, there were many pictures of drugs such as heroin.
After clicking on the picture, I could easily find myself learning
because it had really simple but descriptive information about
what the drug is.
Also, this site provides something that none of the sites above
provided: street name. I thought it was kind of interesting because
I always wondered what people “actually” call the drug instead of
calling it “hey dude give me some heroin” in front of people.
The site also describes how it is taken and how it will affect body in
very short but informative words.
The one thing I didn’t like about it was the fact that the site has
nothing new whereas in Xperiment, you get to actually play with
the drug and experiment on the eye “Url” which gives you the idea
of how bad the drug is.
Questions
1.
Would young people find the website engaging? Why or why not?
2.
Is the website informative, organized, easy to navigate?
Young people might not find this engaging simply because this site does not have something
unique, something new, something interesting.
The website is quite informative although it lacks creativity which made me kind of lose interest
in. It is very simply organized and it is very easy for people to navigate because everything you
need is on one page, and you can always go back to the homepage to see more information.
Conclusion
I have visited 4 sites for drug education. Before
I started, I barely knew anything about drugs
except that it is bad for people, especially
teenagers. However, after visiting these sites, I
really think I am knowledgeable about the
drugs, from A to Z, what happens if I use
ecstasy pill for a long period time, or what
heroin affect human body. And I am planning
on never doing any sorts of drugs. EVER
The best site for teenagers
All four sites had their strong points and weak points.
Some lacked informative purpose, some lacked
uniqueness, some lacked conciseness. Not to mention
that every site was very well made, organized.
I personally was hooked to the Xpriment site’s idea of
actually simulating the drug effects and being able to
play with it mainly because I learned what would
happen if I take marijuana continuously and what
would happen if I take cocaine occasionally, and what
would happen if I take too many ecstasy pills, in about
15 minutes. And it wasn’t even boring. They had many
games for me to participate in, and videos to watch,
instead of long boring paragraphs that essentially say
“Drugs are terrible. Don’t do it.” They succeeded to
visualize what it would be like to be a drug user or a
drug addict.
I recommend the Xperiment site the most for use in
planning 10 classes. I’m sure many students will find
this site both entertaining and educational.
