Heroin is chemically almost identical to
prescription painkillers. But the illegal drug is
more dangerous and much cheaper than
regulated opiates. Jeffrey Brown talks to
National Drug Control Policy director R. Gil
Kerlikowske and Los Angeles Times reporter
Sam Quinones about why heroin use in America
has doubled since 2007 and the deadly
consequences for users and addicts.

Signs and Symptoms
This YouTube is informative with just 2 young men talking about what to
look for. Think about that trip to the dentist or when you had a
backache. Chances are that you have taken a pain pill and felt the effects
of a narcotic. All narcotics (pain killers) are chemically similar to the poppy
plant and are heroin derivatives. If you have ever been in pain you may
have experienced the benefits of pain relief. Its’ that feeling and chemical
euphoria that draws our youth in and gets them addicted. When someone
starts using, especially pills, they may be productive. They may appear calm
but there breathing tends to be slower. With higher doses you may notice
that they may have the nods and other physical symptoms. Narcotics are
the only substance that will pin point your pupils. The pupils will become
very small even in bright light. As with all substances, you should be on the
lookout for changes in baseline behavior. Some of the changes can be
subtle.

How can I protect myself from being
a victim?
• Don't accept drinks from other
people.
• Open containers yourself.
• Keep your drink with you at all
times, even when you go to the
bathroom.
• Don't share drinks.
• Don't drink from punch bowls or
other large, common, open
containers. They may already
have drugs in them.
• Don't drink anything that tastes
or smells strange. Sometimes,
GHB tastes salty.
• Have a non-drinking friend with
you to make sure nothing
happens.
• If you think that you have
been drugged and raped:
• Go to the police station or
hospital right away.
• Get a urine (pee) test as soon as
possible. The drugs leave your
system quickly. Rohypnol stays in
the body for several hours, and
can be detected in the urine up
to 72 hours after taking it. GHB
leaves the body in 12 hours.
• Don't urinate before getting
help.
• Don't douche, bathe, or change
clothes before getting help.
These things may give evidence
of the rape.
