ASK & DISCUSS
• How much do you think teens are affected by
the things they see and hear in the media?
• Would you say the media was a big influence
in your own life? Why or why not?
• How did the media affect you?
• Not drug related
INFLUENCE OF ADVERTISING
Powerful media influence: Alcohol, Tobacco and Overthe-Counter drugs.
Try to influence teens to make a larger profit.
If people start using tobacco or alcohol at a young age,
they are more likely to become addicted…more profit
for company!!!
Teen who is exposed to alcohol advertising is more likely
to drink.
For each additional dollar spent on alcohol advertising in
a local market, there was a 3% increase in teen drinking.
The use of alcohol was depicted in more than 90% of the
current movies (50 % G-rated movies).
EXAMPLE
Old Super Bowl Commercial:
During the Super Bowl, there was a beer commercial
that showed a group of young, good-looking people at
a party, drinking beer and having a great time.
One person in the commercial was being made fun of
because he wasn’t drinking the beer being advertised.
At the end of the commercial, he tried the advertised
beer and everyone at the party cheered.
What are some of the messages being sent about
drinking beer in the commercial?
How does the commercial try to appeal to the target
audience (the group they are intending to influence)?
ANSWER
Beer drinking is popular with young, good-looking people
Drinking beer helps you have a good time
Drinking the right kind of beer will help you fit in and win the
approval of your peers
The setting makes drinking look like fun
The person who’s not drinking with the crowd is made fun of
Drinking is shown as a way to bond with others

ASK & DISCUSS
What effects or
negative
consequences are
being left out of
advertisements
and many media
messages about
tobacco use?
NEGATIVE
CONSEQUENCES LEFT
OUT
Smelly hair and clothes
Declines in physical
stamina
Other people being
bothered by smoke
Lung cancer, mouth cancer
Addiction
WHY AREN’T THESE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCES
INCLUDED IN MEDIA?
Alcohol and tobacco companies are trying to
make a profit.
They may even pay producers to place their
product in movies or TV shows.
Hard to create the image of alcohol or
tobacco use being sexy, cool, or otherwise
desirable if they showed the many negative
things that can happen from using these
drugs.
Not thinking about what’s best for the
viewer/listener .
