 Goal: to develop, implement and provide,
new methods to predict, prevent and
effectively treat human disease.
 PSU’s CTSI supports researchers with a
set of tools to accomplish these goals.

i2b2’s Fundamental Purpose
Cohort identification - Users search a de-identified database,
to determine the existence of a set of unique patients
meeting specified criteria.
The dataset contains de-identified data for over 680,000 unique
patients, from our EMR, billing systems and other smaller
datasets including:
 Demographics
 ICD-9 diagnosis and procedures
 Lab tests
 Medications
 Visit types (inpatient, outpatient, emergency, etc.)
 Cancer staging
 Biorepository sample availability
 Dates associated with each event above
There is NO IRB approval needed for access to this dataset.

Typical i2b2 Scenario
Query database to see if there is a relationship
between iron deficiency anemias and mood disorders.

i2b2 Additional Tools

Once the cohort has been established…
◦ Demographics visualization tool
◦ Timeline tool for visualizing the timing of the
events of the concepts
◦ Export tool for exporting data existing in
i2b2.

REDCap – Electronic Data
Capture for Research






Create forms for data entry and surveys
Surveys delivered to participants
electronically
Reuse of forms for multiple events/arms for
repeated measures such as lab results
Data export to common statistical
packages with de-identification tools
Data import from Excel; great for
retrospective chart reviews
Real time quality rule checks and post
collection data query resolution

Reporting & Exporting Data
•
Exports to most common statistical packages
• De-identification Options
o Automatic removal of pre-specified identifiers,
selected by you during data capture but not
relevant to analysis
o Date Shifting
• Develop quick reports for quality control

Security & Integrity
Audit logs
 Role-based user rights
 Regularly scheduled network security
scans
 Data stored in the Data Center and
backed up nightly


REDCap Demo

Scenario
◦ Create a longitudinal project containing
surveys using a template
◦ Modify a form
◦ Enter data
◦ Send a survey invitation
◦ Record Status Dashboard

Profiles

Profiles is a research networking and expertise mining
software tool to search faculty information
containing:

Additionally, it contains network and connection
pages with visualization tools to view a person’s areas
of research and how they are connected to others.

Profiles
Useful for learning about faculty research
interests and areas
 Can contact faculty if seeking a mentor
and see if an MSR project is available
 Provides opportunity to refer to another
faculty member(s)
