Objective
We will study Prescription and
Over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and
their potential for harm
By the end of the lesson you will be
able to tell the difference between
use, misuse, & abuse of medicine
DRUGS
DRUG – A substance other
than food that changes the way
the body or mind functions.
Medicine - a drug used to
prevent or cure illness or
disease, or to relieve pain
2 ways to obtain drugs legally
PRESCRIPTION DRUG –
Medicine that can legally be
obtained with a prescription.
OVER-THE-COUNTER
DRUG(OTC) – a drug that can be
purchased from a legal source
without a prescription.
Guidelines for Use of
Prescription Drug
1. Follow the directions of your
physician.
2. Do not stop taking drug
because you start to feel better.
3. Keep prescription drugs out
of the reach of children.
4. Do not take drugs that appear
to have been tampered with.
5. Do not take drugs prescribed
for another person.
6. Do not take prescription drugs
past the expiration date.
7. Flush down the toilet
prescription drugs that no longer
is needed.
DIFFERENT KINDS OF LEGAL
DRUGS
Analgesics – drugs that relieve
minor to moderate pain.
Cold remedies - drugs that
relieve cold symptoms.
Antitussives - drugs that relieve
coughing
Sedative hypnotics - a group of
drugs that slow down the nervous
system.
Antacids - drugs that relieve
indigestion.
Antibiotics - drugs that treat
infections caused by bacteria.
Drug Misuse
Using a drug for other than its
intended purpose or by someone
other than person for whom the
drug was intended
Drug Abuse
Drug use which is Physically,
socially, legally, or emotionally
harmful to self or others.
Misuse & Abuse of Drugs
Using drugs increases the risk of
injury or death from:
Motor Vehicle accidents
Pedestrian accidents
Boating accidents
Drowning
Fires
Falls
Using drugs increases the risk
of being involved in:
Murder
Suicide
Theft
Abuse
Rape
Guidelines for Use of OTC
Drug
1. Obtain permission from a parent
before using an OTC drug.
2. Read the label & follow instructions.
3. Use an OTC drug only for it intended
purposes.
4. Stop using if side effects occur. Tell
a parent
5. Do not buy if tamper-resistant
seal is broken.
6. Do not use after expiration
date.
7. Keep OTC in it’s original
container.
