What is a progressive? What were
their goals? Why did the Progressive
Movement Begin?
A. Progressives were “forward thinking people”
who wanted to stop corruption (especially in
gov’t) and improve the quality of life for
Americans.
B. They believed that the good of the people
should guide gov’t actions.
C. Movement began due to 1) industrialization
causing inequities in society (ex. Poor
working conditions) and 2) corruption in gov’t
through spoils system.
What are muckrakers? List specific
muckrakers and their contribution to fighting
corruption. Were they effective?
A. Muckrakers were crusading journalists who
exposed corruption in business, gov’t and
industries. (journalists, photographers, reporters)
B. Upton Sinclair: author of The Jungle –meat
packing industry
-Ida Tarbell: journalist exposed unfair business
practice of John D. Rockefellar & Standard Oil
Co.
-Thomas Nast: cartoonist that exposed Boss Tweed
(as a vulture)
