Lab Investigations
Different Types
For Different Situations
There are 3 types of lab
investigations:
In order to organize your notes on them,
let’s use a THINKING MAP!!
Do you see one that we could take the
Big Idea (LAB INVESTIGATIONS)
and branch it into the 3 types?
LAB INVESTIGATIONS
Observational
Comparative
Experimental
LAB INVESTIGATIONS
using Scientific methods to gather data in various
situations, both in the field and in the lab.
Observational
Comparative
Experimental
Observational

Observing a situation over time, such as:




Behavior of animals in the wild
Changes in plants in an area
How people behave in situations
Data is gathered by making descriptions:


Actual things you observe – OBSERVATION
Things you assume from clues - INFERENCES
Examples of situations that would
best be studied using OBSERVATION


Lions and Hyenas
Unexpected
Comparative

Comparing two different things to each other,
such as:



Laundry Detergents
How different vegetables react to being frozen
Data is gathered by noting how two or more
things react or behave when subjected to the
same situation. Note the differences and the
similarities.
Examples of situations that would
best be studied using COMPARATIVE
EXPERIMENTAL



A fair test where one thing (variable) is manipulated
to gather evidence that would support or not
support your hypothesis
Must be able to repeat the test
Uses the Scientific Method, which involves:






Hypothesis
Independent Variable
Dependent Variable
Control
Conclusion
Step by Step Process
Examples of situations that would
best be studied using EXPERIMENTAL



Will a monkey show evidence of higher
intelligence if given a certain drug?
If I water a plant with Dr. Pepper, will it
grow faster and larger?
Will changing the liquid a toy car is put in
make a difference in how the car reacts?
