Academics to Industry
• Event: Introduction to medicinal chemistry designed for chemistry graduate
students and post docs.
• Concept: The younger chemists perspective on industry careers
– Graduate programs in chemistry often do not expose students to industry careers
– Medicinal chemists need to be able to interface with other scientific disciplines
– Younger chemists are able to teach basic concepts in medicinal chemistry to graduate
students with the appropriate level of detail (biology concepts focus on “why” not “how”)
• Presenters: Five younger chemists with diverse experience
•
Intro to Medicinal Chemistry-The Basics (Erica Campbell)
•
Drug Metabolism (Mark Tichenor)
•
Barriers to Exposure (Graeme Freestone)
•
In Vitro Biology (Ben Pratt)
•
The Role of In Vivo Studies in Drug Development (Ryan Clark)
Event Planning

Attendance maintained (90-110 students) over five seminars
Very engaged, thoughtful questions
Feedback forms
Asked to return in the future
Some students have attended the seminar series twice
