Youthbuild Inverclyde and
West Dunbartonshire
Youthbuild in Brief
• To provide much needed opportunities for young people aged 16-19 to
access training and employment in the construction sector
•Aimed at the most vulnerable and disadvantaged young people
•Most young people will fall into the MCMC category
•Youthbuild assists young people who face barriers to employment. These
may include offending behaviour, lack of qualifications, social work
involvement, drug/alcohol issues, care leavers, long term unemployed, literacy
and numeracy issues.
The Youthbuild Model
The Youthbuild model is made up of three distinct stages
and is a combination of training, support, work
experience and paid employment. The programme
duration is 38 weeks or 9 months in total.
Three distinct stages:
6 weeks training and personal development
6 weeks on site work experience/trial period
26 weeks paid employment subject to performance
Stage 1 (6 weeks training)
The young builders receive 






A training allowance of £60 per week
£12.50 lunch subsidy
Zone card for travel to and from training
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Personal development training
Industry accredited construction certificates
Individual key worker support
Stage 1 (Construction training)












places
In Inverclyde 118 referred for 24 places
Youthbuild Nationally is on average 6 times
over subscribed
Most referrals come from SDS, social services
and JC+
