Substance Abuse
Description
Students will develop an understanding of
facts and myths of substance use and abuse.
 They will classify a variety of drugs and
understand their short and long term effects.
 They will examine why people use drugs
and identify school and community support
resources.

Overall Expectations
Students will:
 Be able to identify factors that contribute to
positive relationships with others,
 Demonstrate personal strategies to deal
effectively with the social influences that
contribute to the use and abuse of alcohol,
tobacco, and other drugs (e.g. cannabis)

Definition of a Drug

Articles (other than food) intended to affect
the structure or any function of the body or
other function of the body of man or other
animals.
Drugs – illegal or legal
Responsible for knowing illegal use of
drugs and legal drugs.
 Canada – alcohol is legal for 19 years and
older; OTC drugs from a pharmacist is
legal; vitamin supplements is a drug
 Canada – substance act prevents the public
from selling any drug without a license


What is the CNS?





CNS – Central Nervous System
CNS comprises of the brain, spinal cord, nerves
Brain is the processor of stimuli (sight, sound,
touch)
Nerves are the receptors of stimuli (eg. Bright
light, heat/cold, booming bass)
Spinal cord is the transmitter of stimuli
information
CNS Drug Categories

STIMULANT - provide a temporary sense
of alertness and well-being as well as relief
from fatigue.
 Amphetamines
 Caffeine
 Cocaine
 Ecstasy (MDMA)

DEPRESSANT – slows down the brain
activity to create a calm or drowsy feeling.
Reaction time to normal events is slow and
uncoordinated.

HALLUCINOGEN – it produces changes in
perception (distortions) , feeling, and
thoughts.

Marijuana – cannabis sativa contains
cannabinoids. THC create feelings of
euphoria and cannabidiol create calm.
