Sold legally in pharmacies and other store’s
without a doctor’s prescription.

Examples:
 Aspirin
 Cold and cough remedies
 Sleep aids

Can be obtained only with a written order
from a doctor and can be purchased only at a
pharmacy.

Doctor determines the correct amount of
medication that the individual needs at the
time the prescription is written.

A chemical substance that people of any age
may not lawfully manufacture, possess, buy
or sell.

Also called street drugs.

Improper use of medicines either prescription
or over the counter.

Examples:
 Taking more than the prescribed amount
 Taking at wrong times of the day
 Is often a mistake or a patients misunderstanding
of doctors orders.

Intentionally used improperly or unsafely.

Example:
 Abusing painkillers
 Abusing over the counter medicines
 Use them to get a “high” instead of curing a pain
or cough

Side effects-an unwanted physical or mental
effect caused by a drug.

Tolerance and Dependence

A person dependent on a drug, stops taking
the drug and will develop withdrawal
symptoms which include:





Nausea or vomiting
Headaches or dizziness
Fever
Digestion problems
Tremors, seizures or death

Hepatitis and HIV

Risks to Fetus and Newborns

Slow body functions by decreasing heart and
breathing rates and lowering blood pressure.

Examples:
 Barbiturates
 CNS Depressants
 Opiates
 Alcohol







Decreased alertness

Confusion



Inhalants- a breathable chemical vapor that
produces mind-altering effects.

Anabolic steroids- synthetic drugs that are
similar to the hormone testosterone.

