• If you are quoting them directly, you should
decide whether or not you are quoting a
sentence, part of a sentence, or two or more
sentences.
Part of a sentence…
• Let’s say you are quoting part of the
following sentence… Inmate Kenneth Biros, if executed
as planned Tuesday morning, would become the first person in the U.S.
to die by lethal injection with a single drug, a process most death
penalty experts agree will take longer than the old method.
However you do not need the whole sentence and
you want bits and pieces. Try “Kenneth Biros…the first
person in the U.S. to die by lethal injection …,”
Part of a Sentence Continued
• Now I have a quote: “Kenneth Biros…the first person
in the U.S. to die by lethal injection …,” But I need to
explain my quote. Try this… Lethal injection is
not prevalent across the country, ”Kenneth Biros…the first
person in the U.S. to die by lethal injection …,” and if he does
in fact die this way, the death penalty will gain new exposure
across the country.
Part of a Sentence…
• You can add commentary before, after, or
on both ends of the sentence. That choice is
up to the writer.
