Factors that influence TEEN
substance abuse/illegal drug use:
• 1. peer pressure: friend don’t you probably

• 6. misleading information
Why illegal drugs are dangerous?
• NOT monitored by the Food and
Drug Administration [FDA]
• No labels or dosing information
• Can be mixed slightly
differently each time
• Can be laced with other
drugs/things
Effects Illegal Drugs have on a teen?
• 1. overdose – strong, sometime fatal reaction to a
drug
• 2. increased risk of contracting Hepatitis B or
HIV
• 3. Affects reasoning/thinking skills which
could lead a teen to do things against their
values/morals
• 4. Loss of relationships
• 5. addiction, mood disorders, loss of short term
memory and the ability to learn, slower brain
development
How Quickly Can a teen Become
Addicted to a Drug?

What happens to a user? – a review
• Tolerance – user needs more and more of
drug to achieve the same high
• Psychological dependence – person believes
the drug is needed in order to function
• Physiological dependence – chemical need for
drug
• Withdrawal – occurs when addict attempt to
quit using the drug – physical symptoms
Consequences for teens
• Apathy – stop caring about life
• Risk-taking increases – more likely to
do dangerous stuff
• Depression and suicide
• Arrest
• Increased likelihood of violence, crime,
and premature death
Consequences for family of teen
•Loss of trust
•Financial burden
•Family is put in hard
situation – what to do?
