What is an Antiemetic?
• Helps relieve nausea and vomiting
• Some are used as antidiarrheal
• Is also used for motion sickness
Examples of antiemetics
• Pepto-Bismol ~ Bismuth
Subsalicylate
• Dramamine ~ Dimenhydrinate
• Imodium ~ Loperamide
Benefits and risks of Antiemetics:
• Benefits include:
- stop feeling nauseated
- stop the vomiting
• Risks include:
-allergic reaction
Common side effects:
•Drowsiness
•Greater tendency to lose
balance
Interactions:
• Do not take if….
• you are taking any other salicylate
medicines such as aspirin.
• You have bloody stool
• If you have history of stroke or heart attack
• Or are pregnant or are breast feeding
How to take antiemetics:
•Take by mouth, follow the
directions closely. Do not
increase your dose or take
more often then directed.
