Libraries in the 21st Century Libraries in an online world
Ms. Faith Johnson
Director, Town of Ulster Public
Library
What does a connected library
provide to it's community?
An on-line library in the 21st Century is a place for:
Management of patron's borrowing records
Reserving books and ordering Inter-Library loans
Access to specialized research resources
historical NY Times
Mango Languages
Consumer Reports
and other printed materials
An on-line library in the 21st Century is a place for:
Access to specialized collections from the
HomeAccess web page:
Auto repair manuals
online encyclopedias
TumbleBooks
over 135 searchable newspapers
thousands of magazines and journals
college prep tools
Genealogy
health and wellness
and many more
Fortunately for the town of Ulster, the library is one of
the better connected libraries in all of NY state.
But both NY and the country lag much of the developed
world in broadband availability and use.
The goal of a highly available computing resource is to
assist the librarians in filling an ever-increasing demand
for computer related services.
NY state's head librarian would like every NY library to
gain the kind of technology resources Ulster has.
An on-line library in the 21st Century is a
place for:
A place for community
Kid's programs
Junior's programs
Senior's programs (Wii bowling in
Marboro?)
Book clubs
A place for learning and advancement test
preparation
including GED, SAT, ACT,
and vocational tests
A place to be on-line for social networking
(Facebook, LinkedIn, etc)
What is available with just a
library card?
Why is technology an important
part of any library’s services?
