Level 1 Thesis
Level one- restate the prompt as a statement.
Prompt: Compare and contrast the effects of
imperialism in India and China?
Level 1: The effects of imperialism are
similar and different in India and China.
Level 2 Thesis
Level two- restate the prompt as a statement but
include the word “because” and say why.
Level 2: The effects of imperialism are
similar in both India and China because, the native
peoples lost control of their economies, but they
are different because in India they suffered a great
famine while in China they suffered drug addiction.
Level 2 thesis statements are so useful because
the things you include after your “because” as
the answer to your “why” become the three body
sections of our essay or outline. This kind of
thesis gives you a clear road map for where the
essay and your reasoning are going.
The Ultimate Thesis of Ultimate Destiny!
Level three- rephrase the prompt in a new way and include
your own philosophy when you address the “why” aspect of
your answer.
Level three thesis statements include three pieces of
evidence to prove the thesis statement (these are the sub
thesis), just like a typical Level 2. However, in a level 3
thesis, there is a deeper, underlining (below the surface)
connection between the three pieces of evidence.
The Ultimate Thesis of Ultimate Destiny!
Prompt: Compare and contrast the effects of
imperialism in two regions?
Level 3 Example: India and China
experienced similar economic effects of
imperialism because they were both forced to
trade with Great Britain and they both had to give
up natural resources, but they experienced
different political effects of imperialism because
China remained politically independent and could
rule itself, but India was taken over completely and
conquered by the British.
Economic effects and Political effects are the
deeper connections between the evidence!
