2015 Changes
2015 changes
For sedation, midazolam can now be given IN (double the IV dose)
Locking devices:
Old protocol said NOT to use them, but if you use them, LE must accompany.
New changes now just says LE must accompany if locking devices used.
Excited Delirium Syndrome
ExDS is a medical emergency that presents itself as a law enforcement
problem
ExDS is a life threatening emergency
ExDS victims exhibit superhuman strength and are impervious to pain
ExDS is usually drug related but it can occur in non-drug users
Neurochemical systems in the brain are abnormal in this disorder
Failure to recognize the symptoms and to provide appropriate medical
treatment may lead to death
Excited Delirium Syndrome

Ketamine
Classification: Dissociative agent and sedative
Indication: ExDS
Onset: 30 seconds IV; 3 – 4 minutes IM
Short duration: 5 – 10 min IV; 12 – 25 min IM
Contraindications:
Hypertension
ALOC
Liver or renal disease
Adverse Reactions include laryngospasms, resp depression, low BP, N&V,
hypersalivation
