space elevator extends beyond the earth’s atmosphere for
32,000 km, its aim being to transport astronauts, technicians,
tourists and nuclear waste from the earth to the orbiting
space-station. It is envisaged that there will be a cable
consisting of numerous carbon nanotubes
Targeted nanoparticels for drug delivery to diseased cells.
This method was developed by the Researchers of the
Missouri University, Columbia (USA).
Carbon Nanotubes. They consist of a molecule with sixty
carbon atoms (C60), the fullerene, discovered in 1986 by
Richard Smalley of Rice University.
NANO-STRUCTURED NATURE: a new generation of
water-repellent materials from the leaves. Water never
adheres to lotus leaves, but runs off in numerous little drops
that form, as a result of the high surface tension on the leaf,
and takes with it the dirt and small insects to be found on
the leaf. This is possible because the lotus leaves have a
layer of hydrophobic-wax globular crystals 1 nm in diameter.
The water-repellent properties of the lotus-leaf. The
hydrophobic effect on lotus-leaves.
The toes on the feet of a gecko are nano-structured and
equipped with adhesive lamellae that create a force
produced by the bristles that is equal to about 400 times the
weight of the creature itself. The gecko also possesses an
intelligent adhesive that can modify the force of adhesion in
accordance with the surface with which it is in contact. Each
of the gecko’s foot are covered by about half a million
bristles and the end of each bristle is sub-divided into
hundreds of spatulas.
Nano-structured products in building: several nanostructured products are available on the market: from mortar
for refurbishing reinforced concrete to photo-active cements,
from thermo-insulating plaster to protectors for wood. Selfcleaning surfaces have become a reality, thanks to the photoactive coating containing nano-particles of titanium dioxide
(TiO2). Photo-active cements also have a purifying effect on
the atmosphere, which has resulted in these cements being
called smog-eaters: the Church Dives in Misericordiae of
Richard Meyer in Rome .
