• Use is the ingestion of alcohol or other drugs (AOD) without
experiencing any negative consequences
• Misuse is when a person experiences negative consequences
from the use of AOD
• Abuse is the continual use of AOD in spite of negative
consequences
• Addiction or dependence is the compulsive use of AOD
regardless of the consequences (Fisher & Harrison, 2009)
• Referral information is available

• Students in grades 6, 9, & 12 are surveyed every three years
• Participation is voluntary

• Chemical use committee has been formed at OHS
• Referral sheet has been created with local resources
• Signs and symptoms sheet and procedure for office referral has
been created and will be shared with staff at the next staff
meeting
• Random bag and locker checks will occur
