D.1 : Effects of medicines and drugs on the
functioning of the body
• Drug- a chemical that affects how the body works
• Medicine- Substance that improves health
How we react:
• Alteration of our physical state. Including our conscious, activity
level, and coordination
• Change in sensory sensations
• Change of our moods/emotions
• May be legal or illegal
• May be helpful or harmful to our bodies
D.2: Stages involved in the research,
development of new pharmaceutical products
• LONG and EXPENSIVE process
• Discovery Research (0-3 years): Extracting compounds that have
biological activity. They are called lead compounds
• Development Research (6 years): This is where drug is tested and
given to patients. In the first phase, they start with 50-100
volunteers. Then, they test it on 200-400 patients and finally, in
stage 3, more than 3,000 patients are tested (half given a placebo
and half given the actual test)
• Regulatory Review(2 years): The medicine is regulated
• Post-marketing monitoring: Drug reaction data over the years
