Consortia Based Science
Developments
The field of HIV research has experienced a recent emergence of
consortia based science as evidenced by the groups CHAVI, CAVD, and
IAVI’s AIDS Vaccine Consortium. These investigational groups are
engaged in collaborations that are creating datasets of ever increasing
size and complexity. There is now an acute need for a laboratory system
that can provide information centralization, higher throughput data
analysis and expanded cross study data mining capabilities.
Early usability testing of the system quickly revealed the need to
address the implicit heterogeneities found in disparate data types. The
result is a novel user interface displayed as a chronological map. The
map allows users of variable skill and investment to intuitively
visualize and interact with temporally indexed datasets within a study.
In conjunction the development employs powerful statistical
output schemas that display interim results in real time. Crucial study
decisions can be rapidly informed thereby accelerating the translation
of the most promising vaccine concepts into candidates that are ready
for clinical testing.

Knowledge Sharing
In recognition of the gaps in data centralization for consortia IAVI is
supporting the development of LabKey Softwares’s open source, webbased software to provide a more expansive solution to capturing and
reporting data from across disparate studies. Understanding common
concerns regarding centralized data repositories the system is specially
designed to: allow the importation and analysis of diverse study datasets,
and most importantly protect publication rights and intellectual property.

Future Directions
IAVI’s ultimate goal is to accelerate study interpretation across the entire
AIDS vaccine discovery field. In order to accomplish this intuitive metaanalysis tools and techniques are being designed to allow studies to be
mined with unprecedented resolution.
