United Nations Secretary-General
UN GAID Strategy Council Meeting
27 Feb. 2007
With the launch of the Global Alliance for ICT and
Development, the international community has taken
that consensus a crucial step further. The Alliance is
well placed to promote the use of ICT in fighting
poverty, illiteracy and disease, in protecting the
environment and empowering women and girls.
It is important that you work as a true partnership of
all essential stakeholders – Governments, civil society,
the private sector, academia and others. All of you are
needed if we are to succeed.”

Priority Areas of
UN GAID e-SDDC
• Poverty Reduction
• Disaster Mitigation
• Public Health
Poverty Reduction Should be the Center of
Development Efforts in Developing Countries –
UNDP Poverty Reduction Strategy
• 1.2 billion people around the globe still live on less
than a dollar a day and nearly 850 million people
go hungry every night.
• Poverty is multidimensional, involving not only a
lack of income, but also ill-health, illiteracy, lack
of access to basic social services, and little
opportunity to participate in the processes that
influence people’s lives.
