1) Influence of the Past
• Native Americans were the first
people to live in Brazil.
• In 1500’s the Portuguese took over
Brazil.
• They forced Native Americans to
work on sugar plantations and many
died from disease.
• Brazil’s gov’t goes back and forth
between dictatorship and
democracy.
2) Government
• Brazil has a democratic republic/ federal
republic gov’t.
• People from 18-70 have to vote if literate.
(Do not have a choice like in the U.S.)
• Can vote starting at 16 years old, but not
required.
• Brazil’s president has more power of his
country than the U.S. president has of his
country.
• Constitution: October 5th 1988
• President: Dilma Rousseff *1st female
president of Brazil! (2011-2016)

• Rousseff was impeached in 2016.
• The Senate voted 61 to 20 to convict Ms.
Rousseff on charges of manipulating the federal
budget in an effort to conceal the nation’s
mounting economic problems.

president expected to finish out her term.
