AGRICULTURAL
PERFORMANCE
Role of Agricultural Sector
• The agriculture is the most important economic sector which
contributed on average about 34 % of the country’s GDP (from
2009 to 2013).
• The sector provides employment for about 70 % of the
country’s population while providing inputs to many major
food processing industries.
• The manufacturing sector in Sudan is overwhelmingly
agriculture-dependent; receiving about 60% of its needed raw
material from agriculture.
• Agricultural export earnings reached US$ 1.5 billion in 2013.
On the other hand, over the period the import bill of
agricultural products, amounting to US$ 2.4 billion in 2013.

Challenges to Agricultural Sector
Opportunities for Investors
• Sudan’s agriculture is characterized by low productivity, as a part
of limited access to low application of improved technology.
limited access by small producers to credit, poor research and
extension services as well as weak linkages with producers for
the uptake of innovations.
• Insufficient Agriculture Support Services
• Insufficient road network, particularly feeder roads, markets and
storage/processing facilities as well as inadequate irrigation
facilities.
Challenges to Agricultural Sector
Opportunities for Investors
• Market Access and Industrialization, high post-harvest losses,
storage, transportation, and basic grading-packaging that secure
the quality, the preservation, and the first value addition to the
produce.
• Natural Resources and Land include inadequate land access and
insecurity of tenure.
• Enabling Environment still need attention
The Available
Investment Chances
in Animal Resources
and Fisheries
The Aspects of investment in animal sector are
variable according to the variety of the sector and they
are as follows:
1. Meat production projects with high capacity that is not less
than 7 thousand tons of mutton, 2 thousand tons of beef
and camel meat in the pastoral farms.
2. Establishment of modern slaughterhouses with
specifications that enable them to be exports abattoirs that
enjoys comprehensive services.
3. Meat storage projects.
4. Dairy production projects with high capacity that is not less
than 500 thousand cows.
5. Milk and milk products manufacturing projects
6. Broilers production projects
7- Layers production projects.
8- The comprehensive veterinary services projects in the
traditional breeding areas including breeds upgrading
centers, vaccine production, veterinary quarantines
establishment, comprehensive veterinary services, fixed
hospitals, mobile clinics and veterinary drugs for animals.
9- Fisheries and aquatic animals projects in the brackish and
salty waters ( the Red Sea), preparation of boats , ships ,
machines, modern equipment , ice factories, coolers and
fisheries products manufacturing.
10- Fish breeding projects in the brackish and salty water using
the modern technologies and facilitated with all equipments.
Animal Resources in Sudan
• This sector is owned and managed by the
private sector
• Social intervention should be done towards
the nomads who lost their range lands after
succession of the south Sudan
• Animal fattening in traditional and rain-fed
agriculture
• The adoption of the Halal meat production
through slaughtering & processing

• 5 cycles of 40,000 heads fattened over 2 months period
• Slaughter-house design capacity of 40 heads per hour
Recommendations
1. Branding and promotion of Sudanese
sheep, highlighting its natural grass-fed.
2. An integrated systems approach using
value chain analysis should be applied
to research, extension, technology
dissemination and marketing to improve
the effectiveness of the supply chains.
3. Construction of a new slaughterhouses
complies with specifications and
international standards
5. Adoption of applicable program for animal
identification
6. Capacity building to public and private
sector .
7. Rehabilitation
of
Sudan
Railways
Corporation to minimize the cost of export.
8. Organization of markets under the
supervision of the ministry of livestock.
