Basque Country Economy
• Wealthiest autonomous region in Spain, GDP per capita 40% higher than
that of the EU and 33.8% higher than Spain's average in 2008.
Industrial activities:
• 19-20th century - Industrial revolution: steel, shipbuilding, agricultural and
fishing
• 1970-1980-Economic crisis: start the development of the service sectors &
new technologies.
• 2009-Financial crisis: the Basque Country outperformed Spain as a whole
with an employment 10% (in line with the EU avg.). Unemployment in Spain:
19.5% (the highest rate in the EU).

GDP performance: the Basque Country was out of recession (0.2% growth).
• The Spanish economy as a whole remained in recession.
• 8 in 10 Spanish municipalities with the lowest unemployment rates lay
across this autonomous community in 2015

Lessons Learned-Reflections
• Metric system immersed at commercial and professional level.
• Different but equally effective work schedule.
• Common mission (TKNIKA/FLATE):
Both work with regional industry to advocate/advance incumbent skillsset certifications and education.
Both service OEM manufacturing infrastructure with increased
equipment automation requirements.
• Expanded appreciation for cultural similarities and differences.
• Opportunity to create cooperative system as an economically and
socially viable way to support both center’s manufacturing community
• Unique/delicious Basque food with interesting dining hours; Awesome
public transportation
