• 9,3 mln ha of forests (almost
some facts in numbers
30% of land cover). Poland is
among the countries with the
largest forest area in the region,
after France, Germany and Ukraine.
• 93% - share of forests under forest
management plans
• Timber harvest in Poland is 60% of
the annual increment.
• 13 000 ha - increase of forests in
2013
• 77,2% - share of forests managed
by the State Forest Holding

The green economy
Forestry sector is an
important sector of the
Polish economy.
It provides around 2% of
the GDP and offers
direct employment to 25
thousand people, and
indirect employment to
300 thousand in the
forest and wood industry.
10
The green economy
Since 1990 the amount of timber
supplied to the market has more
than doubled, to 36 million m3,
with no detriment to the forests.
The State Forests harvest timber in
a exemplary way. Our forests hold
international FSC and PEFC
certificates, proving our belief in
sustainable and ecologically-sound
forest management.
FSC - 7 million ha (5th in the world)
100% of State Forests are within
the PEFC certification system .
11
Standing volume in Poland
Polish forests rank high in Europe with regard to
standing volume.
The State of Europe’s Forests figures for 2011
demonstrate that the average for Poland,
amounting to 247 m3/ha, is more than double of
the European average (112 m3/ha, or 155 m3/ha
excluding the Russian Federation).
Poland, with a relatively large absolute area of
forests and with a standing volume exceeding the
European average, has significant timber
resources which amount to more than 2.3 billion
m3, according to State of Europe’s Forests 2011.

Environmental functions of forests

Polish State Forests were awarded the
2013 UNESCO Prize for Environmental
Preservation
