 After Tito’s Death, Yugoslavia slowly
started to break apart

independence from Yugoslavia in 1995.
Large numbers of Serbs lived there.
Serbia invaded to force them to stay
 1995 NATO air campaign stopped the
killing.



Kosovo (albanians) wanted independence
Serbs may have ethnic cleansed as much as

1999 – NATO air war destroyed the Serb
army.
NATO peacekeepers (KFOR) (Kosovo Force)
entered.
Milosevic died during trial

Helped keep James Meredith out of the
University of Mississippi – segregation
Mississippi National Guard
Elite group of the US airborne.
Specifically trained to fight in harsh
regions and weather.
