Mission: To provide research and analysis support for the
development of more proactive policies, institutions,
programs and information products for disaster
management and humanitarian assistance communities
within and beyond the Asia Pacific region.
Goal: Promote disaster management as an integral part
of national to local economic and social development to
foster disaster-resistant communities.
What is Geocoding?
The process of assigning geographic
identifiers to map features and other data
records.
For example:

What is EM-DAT?
Published by CRED (Center for Research on the
Epidemiology of Disasters)
Database of over 16,000 mass disasters in the world
from 1900-present
Information includes country, disaster type, date, total
number affected, etc.
To qualify for entry into the database, one of the
following criteria must be fulfilled:
Ten (or more) people reported killed
One hundred people reported affected
Declaration of a state of emergency
Call for international assistance

Literacy Rate: Bangladesh (~40% literacy rate) has the highest number
of people affected per disaster.
Access to Healthcare: Philippines and Vietnam (highest number of
physicians per 10,000 people) have the 4th and 5th lowest numbers of people
affected per disaster.
GDP: No visual correlation. Further research could be done.
