How do the body’s
systems and specific
body parts help the
human body to grow
and sustain itself?
in·fra·struc·ture (ĭn'frə-strŭk'chər)
1) An underlying base or foundation especially for an
organization or system.
2) The basic facilities, services, and installations needed
for the functioning of a community or society, such as
transportation and communications systems, water and
power lines, and public institutions including schools,
post offices, and prisons.
Types of Infrastructure
Discussion Questions
1) Identify at least one example of infrastructure from each visual
for a total of eight. How does each example of infrastructure
help South Africa support and meet its needs?
2) Using your list of eight examples of infrastructure create a twopart list that classifies the examples into two groups; physical
examples of infrastructure and institutional infrastructure. How
will you and your partner decide which examples will go into
each group?
3) Pick one example from physical infrastructure and one example
from institutional infrastructure to explain how South Africa
would be affected if both examples of infrastructure did not exist
in South Africa.

Some Infrastructure Challenges Facing South Africa
African Countries Experiencing Power Crisis
How might GDP and Infrastructure be related?
Describe the relationship that you think might exist between a
country’s GDP and its level of infrastructure? How might investment
in infrastructure today affect a country’s GDP in the long run?
Explain using examples.
Comparing Infrastructure Systems between the
United States (a country) to Africa (a continent)
1) Compare and contrast the journey for delivering beer in
California to that of the journey for delivering beer in
Cameroon.
2) How does the existence or lack of infrastructure
support or hinder economic activities within a country?
3) Why don’t the developing countries of the world
simply invest in their infrastructure to improve their
economic situation?
4) What is the economic impact to the consumer,
producer, and GDP resulting from poor infrastructure?
