About 1.8 million meetings and events occur in the U.S. each year, resulting in the
following direct contributions to the economy:

$263 billion in spending

$106 billion contribution to GDP

$14.3 billion federal tax revenue

$11.3 billion state and local tax revenue

$60 billion in labor income

The total economic output of the meeting and event industry including direct
spending and multiplier effects amounts to $907 billion in U.S. economic activity.


Labor Statistics

Per the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the meeting, convention and event planner
profession is one of the fastest-growing careers–with a 44 percent projected growth
rate for 2010-2020, which is much faster than the average growth rate of 14 percent
for all occupations.

In its Best 100 Jobs 2013 Ranking, U.S. News and World Report magazine placed the
meeting, convention and event planner profession at #66 overall and #14 within the
“Best Business Jobs” category.

CareerBuilder reports the meeting, convention and event planner profession as one of
the top five fastest growing jobs in 2013, citing a 10 percent job growth since 2010.

The meeting and event industry employs more than 1.7 million jobs in the U.S., which
is greater than the number of people residing in Philadelphia– the nation’s fifth
largest city with about 1.5 million residents in 2012.


Research from CareerBuilder cites the hospitality industry as one of the top
industries for recent college graduates with a 36 percent year-over-year
growth for entry-level jobs (with at least 1,000 active jobs in March 2013).

Collegeprowler.com shows there are 625 colleges in the U.S. with
hospitality or tourism related degree programs.

The meeting and event industry is considered an early adopter of
environmental stewardship.
