Southeast Asia’s largest economy; GDP growth of 6% in 2012.
The Ministry of Public Works estimates the investment need for
developing water facilities in urban and rural areas between 20112014 will be over $7 billion.

U.S. second largest trading partner in Southeast Asia; bilateral
trade was US$39.9 billion, ranks as 22nd largest trade partner.
Investments are being driven by soft loans from the Ministry of
Green Technology and Water to companies involved in green
technologies.
Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, and Putrajaya are projected to face
water stress as early as this year.

U.S. and Japan are top suppliers,
accounting for approximately 11% of
imports.
Population over 90 million, growing at an
average annual rate of 2%.
Approximately 20-50% of the population
does not have access to safe drinking water.
Wastewater management is a major
concern as the discharge of untreated
wastewater has caused major pollution
problems, especially in urbanized areas.

Country-specific Snapshot: Thailand
U.S. exports to Thailand increased by 21.7
percent last year making it the 27th largest
destination for U.S. exports.
2011’s flood season saw the most severe flooding
in 70 years and caused the Thai economy to grow
by only 1%.
Thailand’s wastewater segment now accounts for
half of the total pollution control equipment market.

Vietnam is a true emerging market with an
economic growth rate among the highest in
the world over the past decade, expanding
at an average about 7.0 percent per year.
Lack of clean water is one of Vietnam’s
most pressing environmental concerns. It is
estimated that only about 70 percent of the
Vietnamese population has access to
potable water.
U.S. companies doing business in
environmental/water and other
infrastructure sectors are advised to
develop capabilities for bidding on ODA
(World Bank, Asian Development Bank,
USAID) projects.

The World Bank Ranks it as the world’s easiest
place to do business.
Singapore is the 13th largest export market and
17th largest trading partner of the United States.
Singapore committed US$264 million to develop
R&D and manpower capabilities to develop and
provide water technologies and solutions and position
Singapore as a “Global Hydro hub.”

infrastructure.
