Imperialism/Colonialism
• Imperialism- the policy
of gaining control of a
land or territory outside
your own = colonies
• Spain & Portugal
launched the Age of
Exploration.
• France controlled most
of W. Europe until
Britain defeated them.
• Britain then becomes
the most powerful on
the strength of their
navy.
Nationalism and War
• The rise of the modern
states was in part due to
nationalism.
• Nationalism- the belief that
one should be loyal to their
nation or the people in
which they share a common
culture.
• Patriotism is pride in one’s
country. Nationalism is a
more extreme view that
one’s country is the best,
and it has often led to war.
• The race for colonial empire
& the rise of nationalism led
to WWI and WWII.
“Patriotism is when love of
your own people comes
first; nationalism, when
hate for people other than
your own comes first.”
-Charles de Gaulle
The Cold War
• 1945- the end of WWII marks the beginning of
the Cold War
• Cold War is military and political tension between
the USA & USSR, the new world leaders
• Europe is divided into Communist (East – behind
the Iron Curtain) & Free Europe (West).
Germany
• Germany is also divided.
• East Germany falls under
Soviet influence.
• West Germany falls under
U.S./allied influence.
• The USSR occupies E.
Europe for 40 years and
sets up communist
governments in each
country = The
Communist Bloc.
• The Berlin Wall was Iron
Curtain in physical form.
Eastern and Western Europe
After World War II, the world map
cracked many times -- the number
of countries rose to 192 today from
74 in 1946 -- and most dramatically
in Europe since the fall of
communism.
• Non-communist Europe is
referred to as Western
Europe.
• These nations have more
experience with
democracy and capitalism
and are developed.
• Former communist
countries are referred to
as Eastern Europe, and
some have been more
successful in the transition
out of communism than
others.
• These can be further
divided …
