The LNL Front End Laboratory:
Abstract:
In the framework of the SPES Radioactive Beam Facility of
INFN, a dedicated Ion Source R&D program has been
recently started at the Legnaro National Laboratories. For
this program, an off-line version of the SPES front-end is fully
operative at LNL (Italy). This apparatus permits the
production of stable ion beams as well as its transport to the
diagnostic instrumentation where is characteristic are
measured. A beam profiler is used to detect the beam shape;
a Faraday Cup is used to measure the beam current; and the
ion source emittance is measure using an emittance meter.
These instruments enable the user to perform ion source
efficiency and emittance studies in order to characterize and
improve them, which is essential for the accelerator designer,
the experimentalist, and operators.

The Safety Control System
The system is fully automatized using control system
based on a PLC (Schneider M340). The user can
select predefined operation from a touch screen
interface (Schneider Magelis).

The safety control have been designed
achieving a PL e/Cat. 4 (EN/ISO 138491) and a SIL3 (EN/IEC 62061) safety
level. It controls: (1) the high voltage, (2)
the target complex heating, (3) the
pneumatic chamber handling, and (4)
the LASER systems. A PLC is used to
monitor the status of the system, to
allow the user to power on/off each
system (when possible) and to control
the
sequence of pre-established
automatic operations.

Test with Stable Beams at LNL
At LNL all the test using the off-line Front End
