The EnergyVAULT™ is a safe, low maintenance energy storage solution that can be scaled
from kW to MW applications. The EnergyVAULT™ is comprised of Grid-TRONIX™
proprietary Control System, a Battery Management System and Lithium-Ion battery
modules. A state-of-the-art power conversion system offers best in class power quality and a
real-time control software interfaces batteries to the electrical network, thereby controlling
the stored power, and optimizing the charge or discharge of the batteries according to
electrical grid needs.

The EnergyVAULT™ is a complete engineered and fully integrated solution mounted in a
40 ft. climate controlled container* for easy transportation, installation and interconnection.
The EnergyVAULT™ Energy Storage Solution gives operators the ability to save electricity
for future use. This energy can then be made available in seconds to handle peak loads,
meet seasonal requirements, or be traded in the energy markets, all essential to Smart Grid
development. By combining industry experience and a complete portfolio of storage
applications, UtiliCell can customize each installation for your specific generation, load and

DESCRIPTION
The main building block of the EnergyVAULT™ Energy Storage Solution is an Energy
Storage Module (ESM). This building block consists of:

Battery Modules. Lithium-ion battery modules are arranged in a parallelStorage

that forms a battery pack, which provides the energy storage element for each
ESM. The quantity of modules and packs can be scaled to meet any application.
Advanced Battery Management System. A sophisticated monitoring system that
measures and controls charging and discharging, while optimizing performance and
protecting capacity.
Grid-TRONIX™ Control System. A modern control system architecture that coordinates
between the energy storage modules, balance of plant equipment, SCADA, substation
automation, and generation control systems. Grid-TRONIX™ monitors and controls to
optimize system performance.
Advanced Power Electronics . A solid-state, industrial-grade power electronics module
that convert s AC to DC and DC to AC. The power unit is a 1.5 MVA four-quadrant
bidirectional inverter/charger that accepts P and Q commands, in and out.
Web User Interface . The Web User Interface (WUI) runs on a standard PC with a
standard browser. It displays all the status information for the EnergyVAULT™ and allows
the operator to control the functions of the EnergyVAULT™.

BATTERY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
UtiliCell’s battery modules come standard with
our advanced BatteryWatch™ Battery
Management System (BMS). This sophisticated
voltage and measurement system controls the
charging and discharging of the storage
batteries. A wide variety of system parameters
are tracked and stored to ensure the health and
history of every battery cell, overall performance
and accurate forward-looking predictions can be
developed from the data. BatteryWatch™
protects and optimizes the battery by protecting
the battery from operating outside its Safe
Operating Area, monitoring its state, calculating
secondary data, reporting that data, controlling
its environment, authenticating it and / or
balancing it. BatteryWatch™ also performs
Thermal Management. Thermal management of
lithium-ion battery systems is critical to success
because extreme temperatures can affect
battery performance, reliability, safety and
durability.
REAL TIME CONTROL SYSTEM
The UtiliCell STC-1000 is a Storage
Transaction Controller (STC) centered at the
heart of any electric grid energy storage
systems. Implementing our proprietary
Grid-TRONIX™ Control System Architecture
and EnergyWatch™ Software Suite, the STC1000 provides smart gird intelligence for the
control and deployment of energy storage. The
unit programs and controls the load side AC
power and energy, the DC power and energy
through the battery, while having the ability to
couple and bridge in other sources such as PV
or Wind. The STC-1000 is populated with a
variety of expansion modules for additional IO,
processing and control capabilities. The
STC-1000 is located in Control Cabinet of the
EnergyVAULT™.

USER INTERFACE AND MARKET DECISION ENGINE
Web User Interface
The Web User Interface (WebUI) runs on a
standard PC with standard browsers. It gives the
user the ability to view and control the system by
simply opening a web page from any computer
over the network. The WebUI displays important
system information for the EnergyVAULT™ and
allows the operator to control functions of the
EnergyVAULT™. It samples data from the
database and displays values every two seconds.
MarketWatch™ Market Decision Engine
UtiliCell offers an optional state-of-art market
intelligence platform. MarketWatch™ monitors
power market prices and takes action based on
an instant cost-benefit analysis. The system
optimizes charge and discharge timing by
factoring SOC, spot prices and awarded
capacity. MarketWatch™ enables power traders
to mitigate risk, increase returns and create
innovative revenue streams.
