FT232R Overview
FT232R is a USB to UART interface with
Data transfer rates of 3Mbaud at TTL levels
Operating supply current in normal node of 15mA
Operating supply current in suspend mode of 70µA
UART interface support for 7-8 bits and 1-2 stop bits
128 bytes RX buffer and 256 bytes TX buffer
Operating voltages from 3.3V to 5.5V
Fully integrated 1Kb EEPROM to store device descriptors and CBUS I/O configuration
FT232R finds application in
USB to UART(RS232,RS422,RS485) converters
USB upgradation of legacy peripherals
PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) to USB data transfer
USB smart card readers
FT232R

Challenges Using FTDI FT232R
1. Low FIFO receive (RX) buffer memory leads to unreliable data transfer
Transmission rates of a CPU is higher than the receiving rate of the device , hence the device needs RX buffers
High transmission rates require RX buffers of high memory size to prevent loss of data
FT232R has a low RX buffer size of only 128 bytes

cables
2. High suspend current leads to high power consumption
USB to UART cable remains in suspend mode when not transferring data
Suspend mode current should be as low as possible to save power
FT232R has a high suspend mode current of 70µA
A USB to DB9 serial converter
cable has low suspend current
requirements
CY7C65213 solves these problems
RX buffer of 256 bytes allows for high data transfer rates with minimal data loss
Industry’s lowest suspend mode current of 5µA consumes the least power
CY7C65213 is a reliable, low power solution for USB to UART converters
