Power factor:
Φ = Power Factor = kVA/ kW, should be >0.9

Electrical Tariffs:
• 01 to 02 – Domestic, 01 day rate, 02 night rate, normally quarterly
accounts
• 03 to 04 - Industrial, 03 day rate, 04 night rate, normally quarterly
accounts
• 05 to 08 – Industrial but also monthly demand (MD), normally
monthly accounts
• 00 – Industrial and only on 100 kVA sites, with a CoP (Code of
practise) electricity meter. The meter could have either be a radio,
GPRS or GSM system whereby the Supplier can dial up the site or
pick up the radio signal without entering the building

• Definitions :• Luminous Intensity –
candela cd. A measurement of the magnitude
of luminance or light reflected from a surface ie. cd/sq.m.
• Luminous Lux – lumen (lm) a measurement of the visible light energy
emitted.
• Illuminance – lumens per square metre lm/sq.m or lux (lx) a
measurement of the light failing on the surface.
• Efficacy – efficiency of lamp in lumens per watt (lm/W) Luminous efficacy
– Luminous flux output Electrical power input.
• Glare Index – a numerical comparison ranging from about 10 for
shaded light to about 30 for an exposed lamp. Calculated by considering
the light source size, location, luminances and effect of its surroundings

18w/8.27
Ra 8 = 80-90, 27 = 2,700 = temperature
T12 600 – 2FT = 55W halogen
VS
T5 2 = 24W
+ 10% for starter = 65W
+ 3 to 4 watts
‘Discharge’ means no filament
for electronic ballast
Can dim on this type of fitting
Saving in Watts = 37, 57% saving in Energy and CO2

Low voltage supply to buildings 11kVolts
LEVEL 4
ENERGY ASSESSOR TRAINING
Single phase supply is 240 volts is to most domestic and small commercial
buildings
Three phase supply 400 volts is most large commercial and public buildings

•To convert electrical power into Watts
= Volts * Amps = Watts
Example1
What size of fuse would you need for a 7.2kW shower? When supplied electricity is 240
volts
7.2 kW = 7200 watts
Amps = Watts/ Volts = 7,200/ 240 = 30 Amps
• To calculate the number of lights needed in an office =
Lux level *Area of Office (l * w)
=
Flux (Lumens/ fitting) * utilisation factor * maintenance
Example 2
An Office 8m long by 7m wide requires an illumination level of 400 lux on the working
plane. It is proposed to use 80 Watt fluorescent fittings having a rated output of 7375
lumens each. Assuming a utilisation factor of 0.5 and a maintenance factor of 0.8, design
the lighting scheme.
Number of fittings = 400 *8 * 7
= 7.59 = say 8
7375 * 0.5 * 0.8
