Introducing the
HA325 Horizontal Output and Flyback Tester:
A handheld, batteryoperated Analyzer that
isolates horizontal defects
in video displays - at the
job site or on the bench.
Strong sales of new high-resolution video
displays & a large base of existing units
means profitable servicing opportunities:
 250 million CRT-based video
displays are estimated in use today
- not including PC monitors.
 Sales of CRT-based video displays
exceed 22 million annually.
 Over 1 million High Definition sets
will be sold this year.
 Projection systems & large displays
require on-site service & repair.
Technicians indicate more than 50% of CRT
display failures are horizontal related.
* Horizontal problems cause confusing
interaction with other circuits.
* Output stage defects cause high currents
that stress or quickly burn-out costly
components.
* Many loading problems caused by defective
components cannot be detected with an
ohmmeter.
* Shutdown conditions result in momentary
operation, leaving no time to make
measurements.
Why?
Overview of the HA325’s Features:
1. Horizontal Output Load Test:
Identifies horizontal output stage defects
quickly & accurately in any CRT-based SDTV,
EDTV, HDTV or computer monitor. Benchproven in over 5,000 service centers.
2. Flyback & IHVT Load Test
Analyzes flybacks and IHVTs for internal
defects.
3. Ringer Tests
Identifies shorted turns in flybacks, yokes,
switching transformers or other coils.
4. Assistance Messages
Help messages guide you and simplify
troubleshooting.
5. Handheld & Battery Operated
Use in the home, field, or on the bench.
HA325 Feature #1:
Horizontal Output Load Test
Functionally tests horizontal output stages to detect
loading & defects that do not permit power-on testing.
Benefits:
- Identify horizontal output stage
defects before replacing &
burning out replacement parts.
- Quickly determine if horizontal
output stage defects exist before
applying AC voltage.
- Determine if the horizontal output
stage is the cause of power supply
defects or improper operation.
HA325 Feature #1:
1. The Load Test requires
3 connections.
2. The Load Test setup
is easy.
Simply select the
setup option that
matches the display’s
normal operating
horizontal frequency:
AUTO (HA325 automatically detects best setup)
TV 16 kHz (conventional televisions)
HD1080 33 kHz (HDTV with 1080 resolution)
HD720 45 kHz (HDTV with 720 resolution)
VESA 38 kHz (computer monitor)
VESA 48 kHz (computer monitor)
VESA 64 kHz (computer monitor)
NOTE: The load test is performed with
NO AC power applied to the chassis.
VESA 75 kHz (computer monitor)
VESA 88 kHz (computer monitor)
MANUAL
HA325 Feature #1:
3. Perform the Load test.
The HA325 displays 3 test
results: mA (B+ current), % EFF
(output stage efficiency), and
µS (retrace pulse time).
Good readings indicate no
severe loading or timing defect
in the horizontal output stage.
Use the bad readings to help
pinpoint the defect.
NOTE: The load test is performed
with NO AC power applied to
the chassis.
Integrated High Voltage transformers (IHVTs) have
many failure modes that affect chassis operation.
HA325 Feature #2:
Flyback and IHVT Load Test
Analyzes flybacks for: open primary, shorted adjacent
turns, and shorts/leakage from the primary to a
secondary winding ground.
Benefits:
- Verify if the flyback or IHVT is
defective when the Horizontal
Output Load Test indicates a
severe output stage defect.
- Confirm IHVT defects before
replacing expensive component.
- Isolate AC Loading defects to
primary components or to flyback
& secondary circuit loads.
HA325 Feature #2:
1. The Flyback & IHVT
Load Test requires 3
connections.
2. The Flyback & IHVT Load Test
setup is easy.
Simply select a setup
option that matches
the flyback/IHVT’s
operation:
AUTO (HA325 automatically detects best setup)
TV (conventional televisions)
Hi-Scan (HDTVs, computer monitors & high-res.
Displays>30kHz)
MANUAL
HA325 Feature #2:
3. Perform the Flyback/IHVT
Load test.
The HA325 displays 3 test results:
mA (primary current), % EFF
(transformer efficiency), and µS
(induced pulse time).
Good readings indicate a good
primary winding, no shorted turns,
& no primary-to-secondary leakage.
Use the bad readings to help
pinpoint the defect.
HA325 Feature #2:
Use the Flyback/IHVT Load test to check IHVT multipliers,
and screen & focus dividers.
Multiply measured
voltage x100 for
actual in-circuit
output voltage from
the IHVT.
Lower than expected
voltage, or an output
that cannot be
varied through the
proper range
indicates a defect.
HA325 Feature #3:
Ringer Test
Analyzes flybacks & IHVT
transformers, yokes, switching
transformers and other coils
for shorted adjacent turns.
Benefits:
- Locate shorted turns that
cannot be detected with an
ohmmeter or with inductance
value checks.
- Confirm IHVT defects
before replacing expensive
components.
HA325 Feature #3:
1. The Ringer Test requires
connections to the yoke,
flyback/IHVT, switching
transformer, or coil.
Yokes - typically blue and red wires
Flybacks & IHVTs - primary winding
SMPS transformers - primary winding
2. The Ringer Test setup is easy.
Apply the ringer test that matches the
component that you are testing. Push and
hold the appropriate Ringer Test button:
Yokes & Flybacks (deflection yokes, flybacks &
the flyback portion of IHVTs.
Coils (coils & inductors used in horizontal or other
electronic stages)
Switching Transformer (transformers used in
switching mode power supplies)
HA325 Feature #3:
3. Perform the Ringer test.
The HA325 displays a ring value
in the digital display.
Good readings of 10 or more
rings means the coil has no
shorted turns.
A reading less than 10 rings
indicates a shorted turn.
Zero rings indicates a possible
open winding or very low Q
(quality) yoke coil with a
shorted turn.
HA325 Feature #4:
Assistance Messages
Instant help messages guide you to the fault and show you what
parts to test. Press the ASSISTANCE button anytime to
access the help displays.
Benefits:
- Display the proper
button to push to make
a measurement
- Determine if the test
conditions are proper
- Determine if the test
results are good or bad
- Advice on what to
check next
HA325 Feature #5:
Hand-held and
battery operated
Measuring just 2” x 5” x 11”
& weighing approximately 2
lbs. the HA325 is ready to
go where ever you need it.
